Two of Sri Lanka’s greatest UNESCO World Heritage Sites in a single unforgettable day. The Dambulla Cave Temple, Sri Lanka’s best-preserved ancient religious complex, opens the day with a climb to a granite outcrop crowned by five cave sanctuaries filled with over 150 Buddha statues and ceiling murals of beauty. The caves have been sacred for over 2,000 years, and the devotion still felt within them makes for a deeply moving encounter. From Dambulla, the route continues to the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the ancient sky palace of King Kashyapa, rising 200 metres from the jungle floor. The climb passes frescoes of celestial maidens and colossal lion’s paw carvings before reaching a summit with breathtaking views and remarkable archaeological remains. An early start is recommended to reach Sigiriya before the midday heat.
