The Koneswaram Temple is one of Sri Lanka’s most sacred Hindu sites, an ancient Shiva temple rebuilt atop Swami Rock, a sheer cliff face 130 metres above the sea at the entrance to Trincomalee harbour. The original temple was destroyed by Portuguese colonists in 1624, and some have since been recovered and enshrined in the rebuilt sanctuary.
